Monte Cassino recently interviewed Donna Sposato Cannon ‘70. Donna is one of 12 children and has continued to support the school in many ways after her graduation, including most recently attending Monte Cassino Grand Friends events with her two grandsons. Read her fond recollections now.
MC: What is the one word that comes to mind when you think of Monte Cassino? Education - at its best!
MC: What is your favorite Monte Cassino tradition? I have so many wonderful memories. I loved the dozen red roses each senior received at graduation in the very hot gym (now the MPAC).
MC: Who is your favorite Monte Cassino teacher or coach, and why? That's a tough one...I have several! First, Sr. Matthias, OSB, taught geometry. If we got caught eating candy in her class, we had to bring a candy bar for each student the next day and one for her! Sr. Mary Stephen, OSB, taught Home Ec — I had to create a dish for my final using liver (yech!!). I marinated it in French salad dressing with sliced onions. She loved it! Finally, Sr. Juliana, OSB, taught Oklahoma History. On the very first day of class, she opened the window and threw her textbook out! We were in shock. She said, "I lived this history, I can teach it WITHOUT the book.
MC: What do you hope for the future of Monte Cassino? My hope is for each student to treasure every minute at this most wonderful school. The only way to better oneself is through the education received at a school like Monte Cassino. The compassion and the nurturing of each student is of utmost importance. To be ever mindful of the needs of others not just at school, but in all activities. The fact that these children can talk about Jesus every single day is so necessary in today's world of ugliness, division, and desperation. These children will learn other Rs such as respect, responsibility, resiliency, reasoning, religion, and reverence. Great things will come from these children who attend Monte Cassino NOW and in the future!
