Exploring the Arts at Monte Cassino

At Monte Cassino, the arts are an integral part of the curriculum, beginning at the Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC) and continuing through middle school. Our arts program provides students with opportunities to develop their creativity, express themselves, and gain confidence in both visual arts and music. Whether through painting, sculpture, or performing arts, students are encouraged to explore their talents and discover new passions. Here’s how Monte Cassino fosters creativity and expression at every stage.

Creativity begins early at Monte Cassino, with fine arts incorporated into the ECLC program. Students explore various media, including drawing and painting, which help them develop their fine motor skills. With an early-childhood spin, our youngest learners enjoy hands-on activities that allow them to express themselves while building foundational artistic skills.

Music is also a key part of the ECLC experience, with weekly lessons led by beloved music teacher Mrs. Ellington. These lessons introduce students to a variety of instruments, composers, and musical traditions. ECLC students move to fun rhythms and are encouraged to connect with the beauty of music. Each year, three- and four-year-olds perform festive Christmas programs, while kindergarten students showcase their talents with a musical revue in the spring.

As students enter elementary school, the arts become even more central to their educational experience. In first grade, art becomes a departmental class led by Miss Wells. Students embark on a tour through art history, learning about different artists, cultures, and techniques from various eras, including ancient Egyptian art, Greek and Roman art, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and Contemporary Art. Along the way, students develop their own creative skills, and those with a particular talent for art have the opportunity to participate in community art shows, as well as the annual elementary art show at Monte Cassino.

Music education at the elementary level, led by Miss Morgan, expands students’ understanding of musical theory, sight-reading, and choreography. Students are introduced to more advanced instruments and even learn what it takes to put on a musical production. Each grade level performs their own musical revue, showcasing the students’ growth in performance and teamwork. These performances highlight both the talent and the hard work of the students and are eagerly anticipated events each year.

As students progress to middle school, they delve deeper into the visual arts through Ms. Puschina's comprehensive art course. This course provides hands-on projects and exploratory activities designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression. Students explore a variety of artistic styles, mediums, and historical contexts while developing their own artistic techniques. This well-rounded approach helps middle school students gain a strong foundation in visual art, preparing them for more advanced creative exploration.
